Videonale

The Videonale e.V.- Vereinigung zur Förderung kultureller Bildung im audiovisuellen Bereich is dedicated to the presentation, mediation and dissemination of contemporary video art production and time-based art forms as well as the care and research of their historical heritage.

Founded in 1984 by a group of Bonn students, the biennial VIDEONALE has developed into one of the most important and renowned festivals for video art and time-based art forms in Germany and Europe.

Among its participants* are pioneering names such as Dara Birnbaum, Lynn Hershman, Gary Hill, Christian Jankowski, Marcel Odenbach, Bill Viola and others. To this day, Videonale is committed to its founding idea of depicting current trends in time-based art and presenting them to a broad audience. The focus continues to be on the promotion of young up-and-coming artists*, supplemented by the presentation of already established positions in the fields of video and time-based art.

Since moving to the Kunstmuseum Bonn in 2004, the Videonale e.V. has shown an exhibition presentation of up to 40 moving image works over several weeks at the VIDEONALE, accompanied by an extensive festival programme of artist talks, discussions, performances, lectures and retrospectives. Since the 15th edition of the festival (2015), the competition and festival programme have had a thematic focus that takes up and reflects current trends in art, media and society.

The VIDEONALE.parcours, a curated exhibition project on student positions at German art academies at various locations in Bonn, complements the competition presentation in the museum and expands the festival into the city.

Between the VIDEONALS, the Videonale e.V. organises lectures on current discourses and positions in video art as part of the lecture series Elektronenströme as well as the film art series VIDEONALE.scope, an annual series of events dedicated to the transitions and interfaces between film and video art with retrospectives on pioneering filmmakers. The Videonale e.V. also tours the programme of each VIDEONALE internationally as part of Videonale on Tour.
