From 2003 onward, the City of Duisburg began to place a special focus on artistic media strategies in public space. The projects implemented under the artistic direction of Söke Dinkla range from media art exhibitions and public installations to performances and dance theatre deploying digital media.

Programme and projects

With the placement in outdoor locations of media artworks by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (2003), Jenny Holzer and Les Levine (2004) and the public art project “PubliCity – Constructing the Truth” (2006), the programme is clearly oriented towards communication and interaction with the public. A focus is trained on continuously shifting perception resulting from the interaction with digital media and changed forms of viewing contemporary art. With a view to European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, this line of investigation is being developed further by interdisciplinary projects such as “Paradoxien des Öffentlichen” (2007/2008) and by new formats being strategically anchored in the arts programme of Duisburg.
