mex was founded in 1992 as an initiative for experimental and intermedia music projects, and was registered as a nonprofit association in 1994. Since that time, mex has provided curious, alert audiences and countless musicians and artists from around the world with a platform to present works ranging from soft to loud, from improvised to concept-based.

Experimental concerts in the context of media art

mex combines experimental concerts with the performance, video, intermedia, dance and visual arts in order to develop a crossover programme. While venues vary according to the context of scheduled performances, the main base is mexKeller in Künstlerhaus Dortmund. The association also acts as a guest curator; fundamental to its artistic concept with like-minded initiatives such as cuba-cultur (Münster), freies rheinland e.V. (Cologne), Voorkamer (Lier), Het Appolohuis (Eindhoven), Metrònom (Barcelona), CAS (Osaka), and Experimental Intermedia Foundation (New York).

Projects and funding

Outstanding projects to date have been PREVISIONS – open systems, Zehn and lento – Eigenzeit. The nonprofit association receives funding from Kulturbüro der Stadt Dortmund and ProJazz e.V.
