Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (KHM)
The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM), founded in 1990, promotes an interdisciplinary approach to media arts. The academy concept networks and integrates the areas of film, art and science within the nine semester degree course in Media and Fine Art. In addition, a two-year postgraduate course offers specialized qualification in the above areas. The option of obtaining doctoral degrees was introduced in 2004.
Studies
Annual attendance at KHM averages 330 students. Working in studios and laboratories, undergraduates are intensively tutored by an international team of professors and assistants in the course of lectures, seminars, workshops, and individual and group tutorials. The degree courses focus on artistic practice: video art, experimental film, photography, sound/acoustics, feature and documentary film, animation film, experimental informatics, performance, painting, sculpture, set-making, design, art in public space. In-depth consideration of the theoretical aspects underlying artistic projects is fostered by courses examining the theory, aesthetic and history of film, the arts and the media. The resultant projects are unconventional and experimental, denying rigid definitions and genres.
Public events
Public events such as the „Best of KHM“ series of screenings featuring debut films by KHM graduates, the „Nocturnes” concert series, weekly lectures, or the programme in the glasmoog exhibition space – a platform for presenting contemporary artistic discourses – place contemporary production at KHM within the context of international artistic questions. At the end of every summer semester, the academy opens its doors to interested parties wishing to visit the annual show with the very recent developments in contemporary art.
