medienwerk.nrw

The initiative medienwerk.nrw was founded in 2000 in order to link and focus the accumulated expertise and interests of institutions and groups working in the field of media art in North Rhine-Westphalia. With twenty members, the network of competence and skills pursues the goal of permanently anchoring the expanding field of media art within cultural-policy considerations. At the same time, the initiative endeavours to enhance the framework conditions pertaining to the presentation, production, distribution and conservation of media art.

As a network, medienwerk.nrw is actively involved in the ongoing transformation of cultural structures in the Ruhr and North Rhine-Westphalia. Our efforts towards furthering thematic media analysis in response to the challenges of globalization include cultural education activities. A further primary concern is to raise the national and international profile of North Rhine-Westphalia as a region in which media art thrives.

The wide spectrum of media specialists collected under the umbrella of medienwerk.nrw is indicative of the interdisciplinary requirements posed by contemporary media art. Alongside classical museums and other exhibiting institutions, the network includes members active in the areas of electronic music, video & film, and multimedia theatre. Artists’ initiatives, developmental workshops laboratories, and archives likewise play an important role alongside teaching, research and further education institutions. The work of medienwerk.nrw is supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia.
