Andrea Parkins
Dortmund, mex im Künstlerhaus Dortmund, Sunderweg 1
Through the channels of her accordion ANDREA PARKINS pulls and pushes fragile thick and thin air, halting and flowing, electronically modified. Feedback, melodica and bells, and various toys and objects contribute to a complex and delicate sound network. ALESSANDRO BOSETTI's ars acustica is influenced by foreign languages and unusually articulating humans. A precarious programmed speech machine co-produces gnarled, devoured loops of verbal expression, whose sense is so centrally and clearly heard that one listens likewise to the concrete sound, an electronically-supported, mazy mantra. The percussionist ANTEZ is pulling and pushing hard and heavy devices on the strained, vibrating skin. Under the permanent friction with aluminium pipe and cymbal the thin leather resounds in the deepest and highest of pitches. It booms and chirps infra-, ultra- and extraordinarily, strongly and bodily - absolutely unplugged.

Düsseldorf, c/o NRW - Forum | Ehrenhof 02 | 40479 Düsseldorf
Presentation and archiving of media art in the light of copyright
A workshop with Dr. Till Kreutzer, Hamburg
The presentation and preservation of media art works is often a delicate issue with regard to copyright restrictions. Interference is often required which can have a bearing on personal rights or editing privileges:
the presentation of installations may require a change to the format of the data or, in the process of archiving, a formatting process may be carried out.
In addition, the question is frequently asked which actions are covered by copyright restrictions which grant a legal right of use and therefore allow actions without permission required from the legal owner.
Museums and archives are often faced with a dilemma when these questions arise. On the one hand there is the public responsibility to make cultural assets accessible and to look after these. On the other hand as they carry out their duties they must conform to the law. Given the complexity of copyright law, this task is not easy to handle.
The workshop should assist here by communicating the basics of copyright law with the aid of practical examples. The content will particularly address the origin and ownership of rights, the rights to process and make modifications, personal rights and restrictions which are relevant in the context of the workshop (e.g. in particular with respect to archiving law).
Dr. iur Till Kreutzer is a lawyer and partner of i.e., office for information technology laws. In his job as a lawyer he advises all types of media companies and especially also public institutions. He teaches copyright law, trademark law, data protection law and the law on personal rights and is a publicist and author of publications on legal themes relevant to information technology in legal journals and the mass media.

George Widener, "Time Machine", 2011
Köln, KHM Aula, Filzengraben 2, 50676 Köln
George Widener is a self-taught artist who employs his mathematical calculating capability and his love for numerical puzzles to create art ranging from complex calendars and numerical palindromes to antiquarian landscapes and Asian scrolls.
His early fascination with calendars was so intense, that he developed a habit of mentally converting any number he saw into a calendar date. He predicts that some day his art will be enjoyed by super-intelligent machines such as thehigh-capacity computers under development today. His art “will help make these machinesfriendlier to us.”
The lecture will be in English.

Köln / Cologne, Museum Ludwig
This exhibition traces a great voyage of discovery of a very special artist: heaving oceans, arid deserts, spreading night skies and intricate spiders’ webs are Vija Celmins’ major themes. Since the late 1960s, this American artist with Latvian roots has used photographs of the four motifs as subjects of her oil paintings, pencil or charcoal drawings, and many different print techniques. Museum Ludwig is exhibiting 60 representative works that show the constantly subtle variations she makes on one’s perception of the same subject.

For over three decades artist Matt Mullican has created a complex body
of work concerned with systems of knowledge, meaning, language and
signification. Mullican has always been concerned with the
relationship between perception and reality, between the ability to
see something and the ability to represent it. Mullican’s oeuvre,
which takes form as drawing, collage, video, sculpture, performance,
and installation, confronts the nature of subjective understanding,
rationality, and cognition – in essence proposing a ›picture‹ of the
world.

Köln, Museum Ludwig
Following an elaborately plan, Joel Shapiro (b. 1941) hung forty colored wooden beams in the museum’s large skylight room. Depending on where the observer stands, the whole thing changes completely; the impressions of size, depth, angle, and color transform. It is a work that will make those who cannot warm to abstract art enthusiastic. For one simple reason: it is highly concrete. It does not keep a cool distance; it reacts like a living creature.
Shapiro, one of the truly great artists of Postminimalism, is concerned with the human di-mension of art. Viewers do not simply stand in front of the work; they encounter it. The Rus-sian Constructivists, however objective they purported to be, also calculated such a dialogue into their work. Shapiro’s last works recall these strict masters and at the same time go nim-bly beyond them.

Köln, GLASMOOG, Kunsthochschule für Medien, Filzengraben 2, 50676 Köln
Johanna Billing’s (born 1973, lives in Stockholm) video works deal with the notion of performance and the possibility it holds to explore issues of the public and the private. The show focuses on Johanna’s most recent video work: “I’m Lost Without Your Rhythm” (2009). The exhibition kicks off an intervention by the artist in the frame work of the series “Stadtbild Intervention” in spring 2011 at the city of Pulheim.

At the turn of the 21st Century, new media has become a matter of course and the technology of electronic data processing is constantly being perfected. Just how immaterial is data really? Does it not carry a certain amount of weight, after all? In the exhibition – developed by students and members of the teaching staff of the KHM – the immaterial is exposed as “Heavy Matter”.

The title of this symposium refers to a new dynamic, which results from a modified perspective of the roles artists, audiences, and users play within today’s arts’ environment, such as museums. What happens to the artistic message in virtual spaces of media art? We would like to discuss these questions during our symposium as part of ISEA2010 RUHR.
